Falmouth Schools and University Students to Create New Town Centre Mural

A neglected underpass in the heart of Falmouth town centre is set for a stunning transformation this summer, as schoolchildren, university students and local partners join forces to create a large-scale public mural celebrating the area’s natural world.

The artwork will be installed in the tunnel connecting Church Street car park to Church Street, turning a functional passageway into a showcase of local flora and fauna, and of the creativity of Falmouth’s younger generations.

A Competition at the Heart of It

Children from Falmouth School and King Charles Primary School are currently taking part in a design competition, with entries inspired by the wildlife and plant life found across the local area. Winning designs will be woven into the final mural, giving pupils a direct stake in shaping a permanent piece of public art in their town.

The mural itself is being developed by Falmouth University illustration students Vinny and Gemma, who will also lead the painting on site when installation takes place in July. Students from Falmouth School will be on hand to support them, making the project a genuinely hands-on experience for the young people involved.

How It Came Together

The project was first proposed by Charlotte Laity, Head of Art at Falmouth School. Speaking about what the collaboration has meant, she said:

“Flora and Fauna has been a true feat of collaboration, giving our young people a voice in shaping something for their town while engaging our students with their community in a meaningful way. It has been a joy celebrating our wonderful local wildlife and beautiful community gardens through their eyes. We are excited to see those ideas evolve into a public artwork and it’s been amazing to watch our students creativity grow.”

The project is being overseen by Nigel Owen, Senior Illustration Lecturer at Falmouth University, who said:

“It’s inspiring to see such a strong collaboration between schools and university students. The energy and originality coming from the children’s work will bring something truly special to the final design.”

Who’s Backing It

Falmouth BID is overseeing and supporting the project, covering the costs involved and providing prizes for the pupils taking part in the design competition.

Once complete, the mural will serve as a lasting celebration of Falmouth’s natural environment, as seen through the eyes of the people growing up in it.
