Cornwall founder launches service that turns lives into hardback books

What if you could sit down, properly think back across your whole life, and end up with a beautiful book of it to hand to your children?

That is the idea behind Biography Studio, a new Cornwall-born service launched by Richard Abrahams, who lives near Penryn with his wife and young son. The platform, available at biographystudio.com, guides people through the chapters of their own life and turns their words into a professionally printed hardback book.

How it works

Users move through a structured set of questions covering childhood, identity, relationships, work, culture and legacy. Answers can be typed or spoken aloud, and there is an optional editorial layer that shapes the raw responses into clean, readable prose while keeping the author’s voice intact. The finished hardback is printed and posted to the door.

There are three pathways to choose from, called Reflections, Chronicle and Wisdom.

“This is not just about the book,” Richard says. “It is about the experience of going back through your life with depth and intention, revisiting the memories, the people, the moments that made you who you are. The book is the record. But what people tell me moves them most is the process of getting there.”

A long way round to the right idea

Richard’s path to founding the company was not a straight line. Born in Plymouth, he left school without the results he had wanted and spent eight years working as a sheet metal tradesman before heading to university in his mid-twenties. He went on to complete a Masters and a PhD in ethnography at the University of Nottingham and the University of Hong Kong, spending years doing field research in China on identity and how people make sense of their lives.

After academia he moved into the corporate world, eventually running a business unit covering Asia Pacific for an international investment information company. He and his wife relocated to Cornwall several years ago, a long-held dream finally realised.

“I have always loved learning and building things,” he says. “But I always reached the point where I had mastered something and needed the next challenge. Biography Studio felt like a natural convergence: technology, personal histories, the academic background, and finally the freedom to do something entirely my own.”

The research behind the questions

The framework draws on Richard’s academic background. The question design is built on established principles of how autobiographical memory works, the idea being that specific, structured prompts surface material that general questions never reach. It also leans on research showing that structured life review, going through a whole life in sequence, produces measurable improvements in psychological wellbeing and life satisfaction.

“Most people never get the opportunity to do this kind of reflection properly,” Richard says. “We spend our lives in the thick of living, always too busy. Biography Studio creates the structure and the space that makes it possible.”

Don’t wait for the tragedy

For Richard the project is personal. He grew up knowing his late grandfather, who died before he was born, only through the stories his family told. That tradition of storytelling, he says, shaped his sense of identity as much as anything he had lived through himself.

The service has also been designed with families facing memory loss in mind.

“Don’t wait for the tragedy to emerge before you find the time to do this,” he says. “If a diagnosis is looming, or if you simply have an older relative whose stories you do not want to lose, this framework gives you a way to sit with them and have the conversations you might never otherwise have.”
