Trying to wriggle out of a speeding ticket cost a Falmouth motorist his licence and more than £800 in penalties.

Wajahat Choudhry was found guilty of failing to identify the driver of his Aston Martin after it was caught speeding through Falmouth.

The car was clocked doing 33mph in a 20mph zone on 29th December 2024.

A costly gamble

The speed itself fell within the range where police would normally offer a fixed penalty of £100 and three points on the licence as an alternative to going to court.

Instead of naming the driver, Wajahat tried to dodge the consequences. The gamble backfired.

What the court handed down

Magistrates fined him £513 and added £90 in court costs on top. A victim surcharge of £205 was also imposed, taking the total financial hit to £808.

He was disqualified from driving for nine months.

The victim surcharge is a mandatory charge added to sentences in England and Wales. The money goes towards services supporting victims and witnesses, including rape support centres, rather than to any individual victim of the specific offence. It applies whether or not the crime involved a named victim.
