Newquay BID Secures Signage and Telecoms Fixes in Town Centre

Two vandalised telecoms boxes in Newquay have just been put right, and there’s a reason behind it that goes beyond a fresh coat of paint.

Newquay BID has been keeping up the pressure on Cornwall Highways and Openreach over a string of infrastructure problems across the town, and some of that work is now starting to show results.

A walkaround with the Mayor

Following recent correspondence with both Cornwall Highways and Openreach, including direct contact with Openreach’s CEO, Newquay BID has continued pushing for action on infrastructure issues affecting the town.

After raising concerns, the BID had a walkaround and discussion with Highways, joined by Newquay’s Mayor, Drew Creek, to flag several priority areas in need of attention.

The conversation covered town centre infrastructure, poor and unclear signage, dangerous signage, and road markings that present safety risks.

One example is at Fore Street Car Park, where vehicles exiting and turning left back towards Fore Street now have a clear indication of the “No Entry” restriction. The BID described this as a small win and a step forward, and said it will keep applying pressure across other areas of Newquay that need improvement.

Alongside the signage work, the BID has been working with Openreach on several vandalised telecoms boxes in the town centre.

Two boxes on Headland Road and Dane Road have now been repainted green, restoring them after vandalism, which the BID called positive progress with lots more still to do.

The next step is more interesting. The BID is now working with Openreach to explore creating murals and artwork on the boxes using designs from local artists. Drew and the BID recognise that freshly painted boxes can often become targets for tagging, so attractive community artwork could help protect them while improving how the town looks. The BID said it hopes to see this move forward in the near future.

How to report problems

The BID is asking people to keep reporting infrastructure concerns. You can report a road or pavement problem through Cornwall Council Highways, and report graffiti or vandalism to Openreach equipment through Openreach.

In the BID’s words, the aim is to keep Newquay clean and keep moving forward together.
