Falmouth Fire Station Pulls Plug on 40 Year Fireworks Tradition

After almost four decades lighting up the November sky, Falmouth’s biggest bonfire night event is losing the team that built it.

Falmouth Community Fire Station has announced it is stepping away from organising and delivering the annual Fireworks Display at Falmouth Cricket Club, ending a run that stretches back close to 40 years.

Hundreds of Thousands Raised

In a statement to the community, the station said the event has been a much-loved fixture of the local calendar and has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for local charities and community causes over the decades.

The fire station credited the volunteers, crews, supporters, and partner organisations who have kept the display running year after year, describing their contribution as extraordinary in its commitment, professionalism, and dedication.

Why Now

The station said the decision has not been taken lightly, but pointed to significant changes in the regulatory and legislative landscape around large scale public events.

While the crews described these changes as both necessary and welcomed for the safety and wellbeing of attendees, they also said they have increased the complexity, responsibility, and operational requirements involved in running an event of this size.

After careful consideration, the crews involved concluded that future events of this nature are now more appropriately managed by professional event organisers with the specialist expertise, infrastructure, and resources required to meet those obligations fully.

The station acknowledged the news will come as a disappointment to many in the community who have supported and enjoyed the event over the years, and thanked everyone who has attended, volunteered, sponsored, or contributed in any way.

It added that it sincerely hopes a suitable alternative arrangement can be found, and said it would wholeheartedly support any sustainable solution that allows the tradition to continue safely and successfully.
