Cornwall Oddfellows Attend Southern Conference in Torquay

A seafront hotel in Torquay played host to friendly society delegates from across the South West last week, with a sizeable Cornish contingent among them.

Three days of meetings and gatherings

Members of the Oddfellows Friendly Society have returned from Torquay following a three day regional conference. Deputies from Redruth, Truro and Plymouth joined others from across the Southern Group for a packed programme of meetings, discussions and social events.

The seafront hotel accommodated and catered for those attending while also providing the conference facilities.

Business, finances and a new committee

Formal business covered key topics affecting the Society, alongside financial reports and the appointment of the Southern Group Executive Committee.

Cornwall was well represented at the gathering. Past Presidents Ken and Pete played active roles, and deputies and members from the Plymouth and Truro District contributed to discussions and supported the smooth running of the event.

Gala dinner and time to explore

A gala dinner and evening of entertainment provided the social highlight. Delegates also took the chance to explore local attractions between sessions.

‘You’re never on your own’

Tony, Provincial Deputy Grand Master, was attending his first conference. He said: “It was a fantastic experience from start to finish. The sense of friendship and support is what makes the Oddfellows so special. You’re part of something bigger and you’re never on your own.”

Joining the Plymouth and Truro District

The Plymouth and Truro District is part of one of the UK’s oldest friendly societies. Members across Redruth, Truro, Plymouth and surrounding areas take part in friendship groups, lunches, organised trips, quizzes, presentations and talks, games, competitions and special events.

Membership also includes compassionate welfare and care support, a members advice line, access to a dedicated travel club and organised holidays, and opportunities to volunteer and fundraise for local, national and international good causes.
