For one Saturday this month, bike obstacle courses, circus performers and an inflatable slide take over Truro city centre, and the Farmers Market has to find somewhere else to set up.

Children’s Day is back in Truro on Saturday 20th June, with around 30 local businesses and organisations putting children and young people at the heart of the day. Now in its ninth year, the day has been brought together by Truro Business Improvement District (BID), with more than 30 shops and eateries also joining in with family-friendly in-store activities and special offers.

What’s happening on Lemon Quay

Lemon Quay is the main hub, with free entertainment and activities throughout the day, including the return of the spectacular mountain bike stunt shows.

Children can have a go at a free bicycle obstacle course, with bikes and helmets provided, and there is a designated area to learn to ride. Older children can try the manual bike machine for off-roading practice. New for this year is the ‘Doctor Bike’ area, where children can bring their bikes in for repair.

There will also be free have-a-go sessions in circus skills with Swamp Circus, dance with Cornwall Dance School, and a boxing demo with the chance to try boxing. Dance performances will come from Cornwall Dance School, Jason Thomas Performing Arts, Stagecoach Performing Arts Truro, Boom Theatre and Just 4 Kids Performing Arts.

Stalls on Lemon Quay will feature art and craft activities and games for families, along with crazy golf and an inflatable slide.

Activities across the rest of the city

Family activities will spread beyond Lemon Quay, including in Pydar Street, and a large inflatable obstacle course is planned for Boscawen Street. The regular Truro Farmers Market traders will be relocating to Boscawen Street for the day to make more room for the family activities on Lemon Quay.

Truro’s two permanent indoor markets, Lemon Street Market and Pannier Market, will be open as usual and joining in with the fun. Street entertainment, including circus performers and live music, will be popping up across the city.

Many of Truro’s shops and eateries will run family-friendly in-store activities and offers, including art activities, competitions and meal deals.

Who is behind the day

Children’s Day is brought to the city by Truro BID and sponsored by Coodes Solicitors.

Alun Jones, Truro BID Manager, said: “We are really looking forward to bringing Children’s Day back to Truro for the ninth year. We hope that families will enjoy the wide range of activities on offer across the city, and we thank all the businesses and organisations joining in. As well as being a fun celebration, Children’s Day helps to attract residents and visitors to stay longer in the city on the day.”

Coodes Solicitors Chairman Elise Alma added: “As a Cornish law firm at the heart of our community, we are delighted to be sponsoring Children’s Day for the fourth year in a row. It promises to be a wonderful event and as proud supporters, it’s great to see children and young people at the centre of the entertainment and activities. We very much hope that it’s a huge success and attracts families from far and wide to enjoy everything on offer in Truro.”
