Cornwall Air Ambulance Paramedic Mick McLachlan Marks 20 Years

Picture turning up to work each morning with no idea where you’ll end up, who you’ll treat or what you’ll face. For Mick McLachlan, that has been the draw for 20 years.

Last week marked two decades of service at Cornwall Air Ambulance for Mick, a Specialist Critical Care Paramedic based at the Newquay airbase.

Mick first joined the ambulance service in Cornwall, SWAST, in June 2002, after 11 years with the London Ambulance Service. He became a full-time member of the Cornwall Air Ambulance crew in May 2006 and has since attended thousands of missions across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

‘A real testament to his dedication’

Mick also holds the role of Deputy Air Operations Officer at the Newquay base, working well beyond frontline critical care.

Steve Garvey, Air Operations Officer, said: “It has been, and continues to be, a huge honour to work alongside Mick and this moment is a real testament to his dedication, skill and passion as a Critical Care Paramedic.

“In addition to providing outstanding care to our patients, Mick also assists in every aspect of running the airbase and plays an integral part in ensuring our operations run as smoothly as possible.”

‘You never know what you’re going to be doing’

Mick said: “20 years in and it’s still such a fantastic job being a part of the Cornwall Air Ambulance crew. From one day to the next, you never know what you’re going to be doing, where you’re going to be or who you’re going to meet. It’s an incredibly satisfying role.”
