West Cornwall Search and Rescue Volunteer To Run Dartmoor Crossing

When someone goes missing on the moors or the coast, a group of unpaid volunteers heads out to find them, whatever the hour and whatever the weather. Steve Tuck is one of them. This summer he is swapping the search for a challenge of his own.

Steve, a volunteer with West Cornwall Search and Rescue Team (WCSAR), is taking on The Dartmoor Crossing ultra running event on 1st August 2026 to raise money for the charity he gives his time to.

Crossing the moor

The Dartmoor Crossing is billed as “an aspirational baby ultra”, described as “a tip-toe into ultra-distance running, but it’s far from easy”. The route runs the length of Dartmoor National Park, taking in open moorland and two of Dartmoor’s 600m summits.

“On 1st August 2026 I will be running the length of Dartmoor National Park to raise vital funds for my team,” Steve said.

A team that runs on donations

Steve is part of the team that responds to searches for missing and vulnerable people across West Cornwall. WCSAR provides a voluntary search and rescue capability across the far southwest of mainland Britain, with unpaid volunteers on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to help the emergency services find people who are lost, missing or injured.

The team relies solely on donations to stay operational. Its average annual running cost is £15,000.

At the time of writing, seven supporters have helped Steve raise £300 of his £400 target, putting him at 75% before he has even reached the start line.
