Falmouth site manager Shaun Marsden wins 11th NHBC award

Most people would be thrilled to win a national award once. Shaun Marsden has now done it eleven times.

The site manager from Cornwall has picked up the National House Building Council Pride in the Job Quality Award for excellence in on-site management, recognising his work at Barratt Bristol’s Pen Bethan development in Falmouth.

A long climb from the bottom rung

Shaun started out as a labourer at 15, after his step-dad encouraged him to join the industry. He soon landed an apprenticeship as a bricklayer and kept moving up, becoming a site manager by the age of 29. He has spent the last two years working with Barratt as a project site manager.

The Pride in the Job scheme has been running for more than 40 years and is the accolade site managers across the country aim for. To win, they have to score highly across quality of workmanship, technical expertise, health and safety and leadership. Judges look for meticulous attention to detail and the qualities that separate the best from the rest.

For Shaun, the eleventh win clearly still means something.

What Shaun said

“I’ve really enjoyed my time at Barratt and have embraced the new challenges that have come with it. Quality is at the heart of everything we do, and it’s a great feeling to have that hard work acknowledged with an award,” he said.

“This recognition is something I’ve been working towards for a long time and it’s incredibly rewarding to achieve it for the 11th time. That said, a site manager is only ever as strong as the team around them, and I’m fortunate to have an exceptional team by my side. This award is as much theirs as it is mine.”

Kevin White, Construction Director at Barratt Bristol, said Shaun’s contribution since joining had been extraordinary.

“His passion and commitment shines through everything he does, so it’s no surprise to see him adding another award to his record,” Kevin said.

“The Pride in the Job Award is something all site managers want to win, so for Barratt Bristol to receive six awards this year really is a wonderful achievement and thoroughly deserved. Well done Shaun!”

Shaun’s was one of six NHBC awards collected by Barratt Bristol for site managers across its region this year.
