A New Crossing for Newquay’s Henver Road Is Back on the Table

Cornwall Council has reopened its consultation on a proposed pedestrian crossing on Henver Road in Newquay. It wants more feedback from the community this time round, to make sure whatever goes in is right for the spot.

What’s being proposed

The plan is to improve pedestrian crossings on Henver Road. The main aim is to give people a safer way to reach the existing bus stops by adding a crossing point near the junction with Church Street. It would also improve the link through to Nansledan and the school.

A Puffin crossing has been put forward as the answer. That’s the traffic signal-controlled type, and it would sit on Henver Road just east of the Church Street junction, next to Warrens bakery.

Why next to Warrens, and not the other side

The council says it looked at the options and landed on the eastern side as the most suitable location. The western side came with too many problems. Reduced visibility, limited room for vehicles to manoeuvre, existing driveways, more disruption to utilities, and the fact it sits close to an existing crossing all counted against it.

The new crossing is meant to work alongside what’s already there. That includes an uncontrolled crossing point on Church Street, closer to where it meets Henver Road.

Have your say

This is the part where locals come in. The council is welcoming comments and suggestions on the proposal, and says all the feedback will be collated and considered before any final decision is made.

You can fill in the survey on the Let’s Talk Cornwall consultation page. It’s quick, and it’s open now.

Whether the Puffin crossing ends up where they’ve drawn it, or somewhere else entirely, may well come down to how many people bother to click through.
