Camborne Students Celebrated at CSIA and Nexus Awards Evening

From charity fundraising to national sporting finals, students at two Camborne schools were recognised this week for a year of effort that went well beyond the classroom.

Students from Camborne Science & International Academy (CSIA) and Nexus, part of Athena Learning Trust, came together with families, staff and governors to celebrate a year of success, dedication and personal growth at the annual Celebration of Achievement Awards Evening.

The event recognised students across Years 7, 8 and 9 for academic achievement, sporting success, commitment to reading, character, community contributions and the schools’ core values.

A night of music and special guests

The evening featured performances from a number of talented students, including pianist Berran Pooley, guitarist Luba Kyianytsia and vocalist Ellie Eastmond, alongside a set from Camborne Brass.

Awards were presented by special guests Nicola Armstrong, Headteacher of St John’s Catholic Primary School, and governors Rich Caitlin and Julie Bishop.

Alongside the academic and subject awards, students were recognised for showing the schools’ character values of integrity, respect, altruism, ambition and resilience. Reading awards celebrated those who had shown commitment, progress and perseverance with their literacy. House awards went to students who had made standout contributions to their school communities.

The major awards

The Moffat Music Cup went to Year 9 student Berran Pooley. A pianist and trombonist, Berran was recognised for his dedication to music and his commitment to developing his talents.

The Stuart Solomon Award, presented in memory of a former student and given to a pupil who has shown exceptional commitment to school life, went to Phoebe Beavis. Phoebe has built up more than 500 positive praise points, kept an outstanding attendance record and thrown herself into school productions, enrichment and leadership opportunities.

The Godrevy Plate was awarded to Year 7 student Harriet Hood for the difference she has made to her community. Despite personal family challenges, Harriet has raised significant funds for charitable causes including the British Heart Foundation, Children with Cancer and the Forever Faith Foundation.

Sporting honours

Sporting success ran through the evening too. Noah Bibb, Llogan Pascoe and Ben Robinson were named Sportsmen of the Year. Lily Dennis, Jess Postlethwaite and Olivia Jenkin took the Sportswomen of the Year awards.

Student of the Year

The evening closed with the Student of the Year awards, recognising students who show excellence across school life and act as role models in their communities.

One of the recipients was Year 9 student Kathlen Ferreira, who joined CSIA from Brazil at the start of the academic year. Through determination and hard work she has become fluent in English and built up more than 1,500 positive praise points.

Fellow Year 9 Student of the Year Alfie Radford was recognised for a remarkable run of achievements in and out of school. As well as captaining the Cornwall Army Cadets rugby team to victory in the national finals, Alfie has moved into Formula 4 motorsport, gained Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification and been selected for a future expedition to Mount Everest Base Camp.

Emma Haase, Principal of CSIA and Nexus, said the evening is one of the highlights of the school year.

“It gives us the opportunity to recognise the many accomplishments of our students and celebrate them alongside the families, carers and staff who support them every step of the way,” she said.

“Our students continue to impress us with their resilience, ambition, kindness and determination. Every student should be proud of their achievements, whether they received an award or not. They have all contributed to the success of our school community.”
