Rattler is taking over the old Walkabout in Newquay

The Australian-themed bar on Newquay’s seafront is about to get a very different accent. Healeys Cyder, the family business behind Rattler, is turning the former Walkabout into Rattler Beach House, the first venue dedicated entirely to the brand.

It will be the first place anywhere built solely around one of Cornwall’s best-known drinks.

The first home of its own for Rattler

Healeys reckon Newquay is the obvious spot for it. More Rattler is drunk in the town than anywhere else in Cornwall, which makes the UK’s surfing capital a natural fit for the brand’s first beach house.

The venue will serve the full Rattler range, including the Original, the fruit variants and the alcohol-free options. Alongside the drinks there will be seasonal food, live sport, music and entertainment.

Joe Healey, Managing Director of Healeys Cornish Cyder Farm, said the move fits what the brand has always stood for.

“Rattler has always been about bringing people together and celebrating everything that’s great about Cornwall, so opening Rattler Beach House feels like a natural next step for the brand,” he said.

“We wanted to create somewhere relaxed, welcoming and full of character, somewhere you can head after the beach, meet your mates, enjoy great food, watch live sport and discover everything Rattler has to offer.

“Whether you’re a Newquay local, spending the summer in Cornwall or just passing through, we can’t wait to welcome you for an ice-cold Rattler by the sea.”

Four decades of Healeys

The Healey family have spent the past forty years growing from a Cornish farming business into one of the county’s most established drink producers. Hundreds of thousands of visitors head to Healeys Cornish Cyder Farm each year, and Rattler has become a fixture in pubs, bars and beach venues across Cornwall and the UK.

The Newquay opening follows Gylly Beach Cafe and Fives Cyder House on Falmouth’s waterfront, both part of the family’s push into Cornwall’s hospitality sector.

Joe framed the new venue as a statement of intent at a hard time for the trade.

“At a time when many hospitality businesses continue to face rising costs and challenging trading conditions, our new venue opening represents a notable vote of confidence in Cornwall’s economy and coastal towns, which remain key surf and tourism destinations,” he said. “We’re so excited to be investing in Cornwall and to be helping bring even more life, energy and great experiences to the seafront with Rattler by the sea.”

A more Cornish seafront

Rattler Beach House has been designed to change as it goes, with Healeys planning to develop what it offers alongside customers and the local community through the summer and beyond.

The switch from Walkabout to Rattler says something about the direction of the coast too. The global brands that once shaped seaside nightlife are giving way to stronger local identity, and the seafront is turning more Cornish as they go.
