Cornwall hits 32°C today, but the coast has other plans

If you are heading for the beach today, the temperature is not the thing to plan around. It is the wind.

The forecast for the South West puts Cornwall in for another hot, largely sunny day, with a maximum temperature of 32°C. Inland it will be breezy. Near the southern coasts and over the hills, the winds turn strong, which changes what a day out actually looks like: parasols that will not stay put, dust and sand on exposed beaches, and choppier water than a clear blue sky suggests.

What today brings

There is a grey start towards the east of the region, but that clears into sun almost everywhere else. It stays dry for most of us, with a few showers possible across the Isles of Scilly.

Inland is breezy. The hills and the south coast get the strong winds.

Tonight will be an uncomfortable one

The dry, clear conditions hold overnight, and so do the strong winds along the south coast. Inland stays warm, with a minimum temperature of 16°C. The forecast is blunt about what that means for sleeping: an uncomfortable night for some.

Monday, and then the thunderstorms

Monday stays largely dry and sunny, with a maximum of 30°C, although there is a small chance of a few showers developing later in the day. It remains windy near the south coast while inland holds on to the heat.

From Tuesday to Thursday, the heatwave continues into the middle of the week. The trade-off is an increasing risk of showers and thunderstorms, especially by Thursday. Winds gradually ease across the same period.

What to do about it

Heat plus strong coastal wind is the combination that catches people out, because the wind takes the edge off how hot you feel while the sun is still doing its work.

• Treat the wind as the hazard, not the heat. Strong winds near southern coasts and over the hills mean more difficult conditions in the water and on exposed cliff paths.
• Plan around the sun, not the breeze. A cooling wind does not mean you are not burning.
• Watch the overnight temperature. With a minimum of 16°C inland, bedrooms will hold their heat. Air the house through while it is dark and clear.
• Keep Thursday loose. The thunderstorm risk builds through the week, so outdoor plans towards the end of it are worth keeping flexible.
• Isles of Scilly, expect a few showers. They are the exception to today’s dry picture.
