Walker hurt on Gwithian Beach as heat adds to rescue

A walk along the sand is one of the easiest things you can do in Cornwall in July. It is also one of the easiest ways to end up needing help, as one person found out at Gwithian.

What happened

At around 4pm, Portreath Coast Rescue Team was tasked to assist RNLI lifeguards at Gwithian Beach with an injured walker suffering from a suspected dislocated knee.

Working alongside the lifeguards, team members assessed the casualty. After a short time, they helped them off the beach and into a family member’s vehicle, allowing them to be taken quickly to the nearest hospital for further assessment and treatment.

It was an exceptionally hot day, which added to the challenges of the incident. The rescue team thanked everyone involved for their cooperation and assistance, and wished the casualty a swift and full recovery.

Why the heat makes it harder

Soft sand, uneven ground and high temperatures are a difficult combination, especially when someone cannot put weight on a leg. Getting an injured person off a beach is slow work at the best of times. Do it in full sun and both the casualty and the people helping them are at risk of overheating before anyone reaches the car park.

What to do if you are walking the coast in this weather

The rescue team has issued safety advice while temperatures stay high.

• Carry plenty of water and stay hydrated.
• Wear suitable footwear for uneven beach terrain.
• Protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen, a hat and appropriate clothing.
• Take regular breaks and avoid overexertion during the hottest part of the day.
• If you are walking in remote areas, let someone know your plans and carry a charged mobile phone.
