Birthday Cake and Hevva Cake at Redruth and Truro Oddfellows

Published On: 13 July 2026Last Updated: 13 July 2026By

Nobody arrived expecting to sing. Then a very large cake appeared, and a room full of people in Redruth found themselves belting out Happy Birthday to a member called Mike, who had no idea it was coming. The cake was big enough to go round everyone.

Quizzes, cake and cool drinks

The Oddfellows Friendship Groups in Redruth and Truro held their summer gatherings this July, with quizzes, friendly competition and a spread of light refreshments.

Members worked their way through cool drinks, tea and coffee, alongside traditional Cornish hevva cake, chocolate biscuits, fresh fruit and sweets. The quizzes were summer themed, and by all accounts more laughter than tension.

More than a social afternoon

The gatherings also gave members a chance to hear what support is available through the Oddfellows. A welfare update covered grants for dental and optical care, emergency financial assistance, the members’ advice line and other support services.

There was a look ahead too. Coming up are a visit to St Just, Sunday lunch groups, a photo competition and a traditional afternoon tea.

Both afternoons finished with raffles raising money for local charities, and members were able to browse free books and DVDs and pick up puzzle sheets to take home between meetings.
