Work restarts on Camborne’s £1m green gateway at Lowarth Holman

A brownfield plot near Tesco is being turned into a green welcome to Camborne town centre, and after a difficult few months the work is under way again. Diggers returned to Lowarth Holman, formerly known as Kerrier Way, this week to pick up where the project left off.

A new contractor after an unexpected setback

Camborne Town Council has appointed Mid Cornwall Landscaping Ltd to finish the construction following the sudden loss of the previous contractor.

That loss led to a run of unavoidable delays and a lengthy process of reviewing designs, securing approvals, updating costs and running another full procurement exercise before work could begin again.

Plans to improve the site near Tesco were submitted in the Camborne Town Deal investment plan, which secured more than £1m for the transformation.

What the space will become

Once finished, Lowarth Holman will provide an attractive and welcoming green space in the heart of Camborne, with new opportunities for people to relax, meet friends, enjoy nature and spend time outdoors.

Works are expected to continue throughout the summer, with completion anticipated in mid-September.

The Mayor of Camborne, Councillor Chapman, said: “We’re extremely pleased to have appointed Mid Cornwall Landscaping Ltd and to be in a position where we can see the project moving forward again. I’d like to thank residents for their patience throughout what has been a challenging period. We’re excited to see works recommence and bring this important project to completion.

“While this process has taken longer than originally anticipated, it has ensured that the project can move forward with confidence and provide a high-quality public space for residents and visitors to enjoy for years to come.”

Behind the scenes

Jon James, Camborne Town Council’s Town Clerk, said a great deal of work had taken place behind the scenes to reach this point.

“The delays have been frustrating for everyone involved, but we now have a clear route to completion and look forward to seeing the community enjoy the finished space,” Jon said.

“On behalf of the Council, I would like to thank residents for their patience and understanding during an undoubtedly challenging period for everyone concerned.”

John Cosgrove, Vice Chair of Camborne Town Deal Board, said the programme was about creating lasting benefits for the town.

“Lowarth Holman is an important part of that vision. It’s fantastic to see the project moving forward once again and nearing the point where residents can begin to enjoy the space,” John said.

A community celebration to come

A community celebration is being planned for the autumn once all the works are complete, with further details to be announced closer to the opening date.

Lowarth Holman, then known as Kerrier Way, was one of ten projects in Camborne awarded £23.7m by Government in 2021 as part of its Town Deal initiative. Administered by Cornwall Council, the projects share a collective aim of regenerating the heart of Camborne and transforming it into a visually appealing, accessible place to live, work, shop and visit.
