Tea Towels and Toasters: Truro Oddfellows Back Hidden Help

Published On: 17 July 2026Last Updated: 17 July 2026By

A raffle at a friendship group in Kea has ended up as sandwich toasters and bedsheets on the shelves of a Cornwall charity. The Truro Oddfellows have handed over a batch of household essentials to Hidden Help, a Scorrier-based charity that gets practical support to people going through hard times.

What was donated

Members of the Truro Oddfellows Friendly Society’s Friendship Group bought a range of everyday items and passed them to Hidden Help, which is based at Scorrier near Redruth. The haul included tea towels, sandwich toasters, electrical extension leads and fitted bedsheets.

The Truro group, which meets in Kea, funded the donation using money raised through its monthly fun prize raffles.

The charity behind it

Hidden Help supports individuals and families across Cornwall by redistributing good-quality donated furniture, clothing and essential household items to people facing difficult circumstances. Giving unwanted items a second life also cuts waste and keeps usable goods in the community rather than in landfill.

The Truro members are following their fellow Oddfellows in Redruth, whose own friendship group donated a selection of new household items to the same charity earlier this year.

Joining the Oddfellows

The Plymouth and Truro District of the Oddfellows is part of one of the UK’s oldest friendly societies, built around friendship, care and community spirit. It is open to people of all ages and backgrounds.

Members take part in friendship groups and social gatherings across Redruth, Truro, Plymouth and the surrounding areas, from lunches and organised trips to quizzes, talks, games and competitions. Membership also comes with welfare and care support, a members advice line, a travel club with organised holidays, and chances to volunteer and raise funds for good causes.

For a free information pack and a diary of upcoming events, the local Secretary is Peter English. He can be reached at [email protected] or on 01209 200810, or by post at The Oddfellows Hall, 49 Green Lane, Redruth, TR15 1LL. More on membership and benefits is on the Oddfellows website.
