Redruth’s second Youth Fest returns to East End Park, 1 August

An 8m climbing wall, a silent disco and a headline set from a young band called 3 Days of Wonder are all on the bill when Redruth’s Youth Fest returns for a second year. The whole thing is free, and it is aimed squarely at the town’s teenagers.

What is on at Youth Fest

The festival takes over East End Park on Saturday 1 August, running from 11:30am to 6pm. The programme packs in live music, demonstrations, workshops, activities, crafts, market stalls and street food across the day.

The climbing wall stands 8m tall and has routes set for beginners as well as the most daring climbers. Elsewhere on the site there is the chance to try skateboarding with Frankie Lanni, have a go at zine making with The Photocopy Club, or learn traditional photographic printing through cyanotype workshops. Willow weaving and bracelet making round out the hands-on side of things.

Music runs through the day on the main stage, with a line-up of young performers building to 3 Days of Wonder, who close the festival. There is a silent disco too, plus a dedicated chill-out tent for anyone who wants to relax and recharge between activities.

The event is for young people aged 11 to 18.

Designed by young people, for young people

Youth Fest has been put together by Redruth Youth Council, whose members live in or attend school in the Redruth area. The council meets each month to talk through the issues affecting young people and to look at ways of making the town and parish a better place to grow up. The event is supported by The National Lottery Community Fund.

Charlotte Williams, Redruth Town Clerk, said the day is “a real celebration led by young people for young people. All of the events have been thoughtfully curated by our communications team, with the suggestions coming directly from our fabulous youth councillors, with support from our town councillors.”

As for why anyone should turn up, Redruth Youth Council put it plainly. People should come “because it’s a free festival, designed by young people, for young people to celebrate our achievements”.
