Camborne Community Awards honour the town’s quiet heroes

A packed room at Camborne Rugby Club spent Thursday 16th July doing something the town does well: saying thank you. Camborne Town Council brought residents, nominees and local organisations together for the annual Camborne Community Awards, an evening set aside to recognise the people who give their time to make the parish a better place.

The awards celebrate the individuals, groups and organisations who pour their energy into Camborne, whether through volunteering, environmental work, sport, the arts or community projects. This year’s ceremony ran across a wide spread of categories, with winners of all ages.

A welcome from the Mayor

Mayor of Camborne, Councillor Edward Chapman, welcomed guests before the awards were handed out through the evening. He pointed to the commitment shown by people right across the parish, from schoolchildren to lifelong volunteers.

“The Community Awards are one of the highlights of our civic calendar,” Edward Chapman said. “Every nominee has made a real difference to the lives of others, and it was a privilege to celebrate their achievements. Camborne is incredibly fortunate to have so many people who give their time, talents and kindness so generously. On behalf of the Town Council, congratulations to all of this year’s nominees and winners.”

This year’s winners

The Young Achiever Award, sponsored by Camborne Redruth Lions, went to Poppy Jenkin. The Sid Godolphin Award, sponsored by Classic Builders, was won by Oscar Evans.

Camborne Community Larder CIC took Group of the Year. Caroline Newton was named Volunteer of the Year, an award sponsored by Redruth Rotary Club.

Michaella Roberts won Outstanding Contribution to Sport, sponsored by Healthy Cornwall, and Camborne Brass took Outstanding Contribution to the Arts. Charlene Sargent was recognised as Environmental Hero.

The Good Neighbour Award, sponsored by Neighbourhood Watch, went to Rayen Molton. Merryn Rogers was named Fundraising Hero, and WellFed Camborne won Best Community Project, sponsored by Cornish Metals.

Chris Gould took the Unsung Hero award. And the Mayor’s Award went to Year 5 at Rosemellin School.

The evening also recognised the runners-up and shortlisted nominees, whose work continues to have an effect across the community.

Thanks all round

Camborne Town Council thanked everyone who submitted nominations, turned up on the night and helped make the ceremony a success. The council also thanked the sponsors whose support keeps the awards going: Tesco, Camborne Redruth Lions, Classic Builders, Redruth Rotary Club, Healthy Cornwall, Neighbourhood Watch and Cornish Metals. A further thank you went to Camborne Rugby Club for hosting.

Behind every name on the list is a story of time given and kindness shared. That, more than any trophy, is what the people in the room came to mark.
