Cornwall’s oldest charity has reached an age most organisations never come close to, and it wants a room full of friendly faces to help mark the moment. iSightCornwall, based in Newham, is 170 years old this year, and it is throwing a party to celebrate.

A milestone at St Erme

The celebration takes place on Thursday 17 September at St Erme Community Centre, Truro. It is a day built around the charity’s clients, members and guests, and the organisation is asking for volunteers who can spare some time to help everything run smoothly.

The list of jobs is the sort that keeps a good event going. Volunteers can help with setting up and decorating the venue, including tablecloths and displays, and getting the room ready before guests arrive. There is tea, coffee and a light lunch of sandwiches and pasties to serve. And there is the part that matters most, welcoming and guiding attendees, chatting with clients and members, and helping people connect with one another and enjoy the day.

What volunteers get back

It is not all giving. Anyone who signs up receives an exclusive iSightCornwall volunteer t-shirt, along with complimentary sighted guide training, a skill that stays useful long after the last pasty has gone.

Songs, a quiz and a 25-minute AGM

The day has a proper programme. There will be a special performance by Oll an Gwella (“All the Best”), the popular four-part harmony group and offshoot of the Newquay Male Voice Choir. A fun quiz and birthday celebrations round out the festivities, and tucked in amongst it all sits a brief 25-minute AGM.

Above everything, the point is to create a warm, welcoming and enjoyable experience as the charity marks 170 years of supporting people living with sight loss.

Anyone who would like to volunteer or find out more can get in touch with Carole Theobald at [email protected].
