35 Miles for 35 Years: Carn Runners Carry the Flag to Carn Brea

Thirty-five miles. Thirty-five years. One flag passed from hand to hand across the mining country of Camborne and Redruth until it reached the top of Carn Brea. That was how Carn Runners chose to mark their birthday, and by the end of it there were tired legs, a lot of photographs and a fair few runners who did not want the day to stop.

On Sunday 19 July, members of the Camborne club set out on a relay around a 35-mile route, one mile for every year since Carn Runners began. The journey was split into seven legs of roughly five miles, with a different group taking each section before handing the flag on to the next team. It was not a race. There were no prizes for finishing first. The point was the club itself, the miles shared and the people who make it what it is.

A route through the heart of Carn country

The relay began at 8am from Camborne Cricket Club, the first group heading off towards Wall with the flag. From there the route ran through Barripper, Camborne, Troon and along the Great Flat Lode into Redruth. Later legs carried on through Illogan and down towards Portreath, then across the coast, through Tehidy Woods and along the Red River Valley. The final group pushed on through Tuckingmill and Heartlands before the last climb to the summit of Carn Brea.

The line was chosen to pass places woven into the club’s story. It took in the former Carn Runners headquarters at Holmans, Camborne School and Broad Lane, along with the roads, lanes and trails members have run together for years. Town streets, country lanes, old mining tracks, woodland, coast path and a few proper Cornish hills, all in a single day.

Seven legs, one club

Each stage brought a new group together, but the flag and the relay baton tied the whole thing into one journey. Every handover came with smiles, photographs, a few words of encouragement and stories from the leg just finished. Some runners took on a single section. Others came back for more, or followed the relay all day to lend support.

Every part of the route had its own feel. Familiar local roads, long stretches of conversation, steep climbs, woodland shade and wide coastal views. The Portreath section served up some of the hardest terrain of the day, and the final leg still had the small matter of Carn Brea waiting at the end. What stuck, though, was the sight of members from right across the club running together and carrying the yellow and blue around the area.

More than a running club

Carn Runners started in 1991, after an advert in the local paper drew together a small group of people keen to form a running club. Thirty-five years on, it is still welcoming, inclusive and social, with members of different ages, abilities and backgrounds sharing the same love of running together. Some of the people involved in the earliest days are still active members now. There is a good deal more about the people, races and moments that shaped the club on the Carn Runners history page.

The relay caught that history without trying to recreate it. Past and present members were brought together by the same things that have always sat at the heart of the club, the shared miles, the friendship, the encouragement. All day there was a steady flow of chatter, old race stories, club nights remembered and friendships that began on a run. A running club is rarely about results or personal bests. It is about the people beside you and the support that turns up when a run gets hard.

A special finish at Carn Brea

After seven legs and 35 miles, the flag finally reached the top of Carn Brea. Members gathered around the monument to bring in the last runners, mark the achievement and toast 35 years of the club. Having some of the founding members there made it land harder, linking the very start of Carn Runners to the club it has grown into.

From the summit, members could look back across much of the ground the relay had covered during the day. A fitting place to end a route built around a club so tied to Camborne, Redruth and the villages around them.

Thank you to everyone who made it happen

A day like this does not come together on its own. A big thank you went to James, who helped organise the relay, plan the route, coordinate the groups and keep everything moving. Thanks went to the leg leaders who guided each group, to everyone who ferried runners between changeover points, and to those who shared photos, videos and updates as the day went on.

Most of all, the thanks went to every member who ran, supported, cheered or simply turned up at Carn Brea for the celebration. One leg or several, out on the route or working behind the scenes, all of it added up to the day. The club also marked the past and present members who have shaped Carn Runners over 35 years, every club night, race, social run and volunteering shift among them.

Here’s to the next chapter

The relay covered 35 miles, but the day carried more than a number. It marked 35 years of shared miles, friendships and encouragement, and it brought different generations of Carn Runners together on the same stretch of Cornish ground.

Some of those who ran the last leg to the summit had first pulled on the vest back in 1991. Thirty-five years, thirty-five miles, and a flag that still has plenty of ground left to cover.
