Steam engines and lawnmower racing return to Boconnoc this weekend

The traction engines are back in steam and the show ring is set. From today, the Boconnoc Estate near Lostwithiel gives over three days to vintage machinery of every size, and organisers are expecting thousands of visitors through the gates before Sunday evening.

Three days of steam near Lostwithiel

Boconnoc Steam Fair runs from Friday 7 August to Sunday 9 August at the Boconnoc Estate, just outside Lostwithiel. It is organised by the Liskeard Steam and Vintage Club and has become one of the largest steam fairs in the South West.

The fair has been running since 1999. Each summer it fills the parkland with full-size and miniature steam engines, the sort of machines that once did the heavy lifting on Cornish farms and roads, along with the people who keep them working.

From military vehicles to lawnmower racing

Steam is only the start. The line-up takes in classic cars, motorcycles and tractors, stationary working engines, and commercial and military vehicles, with events running in the main show ring across the weekend.

Away from the machinery there are trade stands, craft tents, food and drink outlets, live entertainment, trailer rides and a fun fair. And for anyone who reckons they have seen everything a country show can offer, there is lawnmower racing.

“There is sure to be something for everyone at this year’s Boconnoc Steam Fair,” organisers said.

A weekend built on history and community

The club describes the fair as a celebration of history, community and the appeal of industrial heritage. Much of what turns up is restored and maintained by the owners themselves, from 1930s Austin Sevens to green ex-military lorries and forklifts.
