Bosvena Voices: new Lanivet choir with Truro Cathedral in its sights

You do not need to read music, pass an audition or give up your evenings. A new community choir starting in Lanivet this September asks only that you turn up on a Tuesday afternoon and sing.

Tuesday afternoons at Lanivet Methodist Church

Bosvena Voices is a new mixed voice community choir, and it meets in the afternoon rather than the evening. The first session is on Tuesday 8 September, 2pm to 4pm, at Lanivet Methodist Church, and it runs every Tuesday from there.

There are no auditions, the group welcomes anyone who loves to sing, and the first session is free so you can try it before you commit. Anyone who wants to join can contact the membership secretary at [email protected].

Meet Martin Palmer, the man out front

The choir’s musical director is Martin Palmer, described by Bosvena Voices as effervescent, energetic and professional, with a “what can possibly go wrong” attitude. Martin is the retired Head of Music at Truro School and was musical director of Truro Choral Society for 19 years.

He now works as a freelance musician, running two chamber choirs and two community choirs, Bosvena Voices among them, as well as playing the organ. Away from music he is a long distance cyclist and runner.

Popular songs, classical pieces and friends across Cornwall

Bosvena Voices sings a wide variety of popular songs and classical pieces, and the group likes to share its singing with others. It has links with the Newquay and Falmouth community choirs, with concerts held in Newquay both last Christmas and this Easter.

The choir also joined many other musicians at Truro Cathedral for a concert in June.

The Last Night of the Cornish Proms

The plans for the September term include The Last Night of the Cornish Proms, now confirmed for Saturday 10 October at Truro Cathedral. Bosvena Voices will join many others to fill the cathedral with music, with a programme of familiar, fun Cornish and non-Cornish pieces to celebrate Cornwall in song. A Christmas concert and the usual festivities follow later in the term.
