Launceston College sports day raises nearly £800 as records tumble

Sports day at Launceston College came with the usual sprint finishes and field-event nerves this year. It also came with fundraising stalls, face paint and collection buckets, and by the time the last race had run the school had raised nearly £800 for charity.

Nearly £800 raised for Cancer Research UK

Students, staff and families at Launceston College raised £791.44 for Cancer Research UK at the school’s annual sports day. The money came from a series of stalls and activities organised by staff and students across the day, with every pound going towards the charity’s life-saving research.

Long-standing records broken

The competition itself gave the crowd plenty to cheer. Several students rewrote the school’s record books, including performances that had stood for more than a decade. Misha broke the Year 9 boys’ long jump record with a leap of 5.07m. Bethany set a new Year 9 girls’ javelin record with a throw of 25.1m. And Sam broke the Year 10 boys’ 400m record in a time of 1:01.87.

Hepworth House crowned champions

When the points were added up, Hepworth House were crowned overall champions after a full day of competition. The college also welcomed the Mayor of Launceston, Councillor Nicola Gilbert, who joined students, staff and families for the celebration.

Mrs Lucy Rose, who organised the event, said: “Sports day is always one of the highlights of the school year, and we are so proud to know our students gave their all both on the track and in support of such an important cause.

“Raising almost £800 for Cancer Research UK is a fantastic achievement, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who donated or helped make the day such a success. We are also delighted to have seen so many outstanding sporting performances, including several new school records.”
