Porthgwidden toilets shut in St Ives, here’s where to go instead

A stretch of golden sand tucked below the Island, Porthgwidden is one of those little St Ives coves people happily lose a whole afternoon to. Just be aware that the loos are out of action for now.

What has happened

St Ives Town Council has confirmed that the public toilets at Porthgwidden are temporarily closed for emergency repairs. In a notice shared on its Facebook page, the council said its team is “working hard to have them open again as soon as possible” and thanked visitors for their understanding.

No date has been given for when the facilities will reopen. The nature of the emergency repairs has not been detailed either.

Where to go instead

The good news for anyone caught out is that St Ives is well served for public toilets within a short walk of the beach. The council has pointed people towards five nearby alternatives: Smeaton’s Pier, Porthmeor, The Sloop, West Pier and Porthminster.

The council also shared a map marking the closest options for anyone standing at Porthgwidden. The Sloop and West Pier sit down towards the harbour front, a few minutes on foot, while Porthmeor is on the other side of the Island and Porthminster is a longer stroll round past the railway station.

With the summer season in full swing and the town busy with visitors, the town council says it is pushing to get the Porthgwidden facilities back open as quickly as the repairs allow.
