Seventy-five years of British teenagers refusing to sit still gets its own October season in Saltash, and tickets start at a fiver. Films, archive footage and a needle-and-thread workshop are all on the bill, and most of it is aimed squarely at the sort of nights out that parents would rather not hear about.

What the Rip It Up season is

Saltash Studios is hosting a mini-season of films and workshops this October as part of Rip It Up, a nationwide festival marking 75 years of youth rebellion and creativity. Tickets are just £5 for films, £4 for under-16s, and £18 for the workshop. Every film starts at 7.30pm.

Archive hooligans and Union Street nights

Things kick off on Friday 2 October with a double bill. First up is Hippies & Hooligans, a nostalgic and humorous look back at the fashion, energy and local antics of past generations across the South West, told through archive film footage. That is followed by the local documentary W: A Return to Oz, which remembers the glory days of clubbing on Plymouth’s Union Street.

A surfer’s birthday and a free-party folk history

On Friday 16 October the season turns to Blue Juice, a classic Cornish coming-of-age story about a 20-something surfer torn between youth and adulthood. His friends turn up unannounced to help him celebrate his birthday, with the inverted commas doing plenty of work.

The run closes on Friday 23 October with Free Party, A Folk History. The new film digs into the untold story of the free party movement and how its ripples spread around the world, from raves and festivals to politics and protest. It includes local footage from Treworgey, Bodmin Moor, Camelford, Dartmoor and more.

Bring your own wardrobe

There is a chance to make something too. A Creative Clothing Workshop runs on Wednesday 7 October. Bring a piece of clothing, or a few, and stitch or paint a design to bring your wardrobe back to life. Punk or pretty, the brief is simply to let your imagination run wild.

How to book

Tickets can be bought online at www.saltashstudios.org, at £5 for films (£4 for under-16s) and £18 for the workshop. The season is funded by the BFI FAN fund.
