Saltash’s Huntley Gardens cleared of glass, but a warning remains

If you are heading to Huntley Gardens with young children or a dog this week, it is worth watching where you step. Saltash Town Council has cleared a build-up of litter and broken glass from the green space, but says a few small shards may still have been missed.

What was left behind

Huntley Gardens had become littered with broken glass and bottles, along with general rubbish. The photographs shared by the council show cans, wrappers and bottles scattered across the dry grass and bare earth, with a dumped bicycle lying in the undergrowth.

The council’s team has since worked hard to clear the mess. But glass is the one kind of litter that does not simply vanish once the bottles are picked up.

The request to visitors

The message from the council is a simple one. People are being asked to put their rubbish in the nearest general waste or recycling bin rather than leaving it behind in the gardens.

The council also thanked the many people who already dispose of their waste responsibly, saying it wants to work with the community to keep Saltash safe, litter-free and looking beautiful.

A hazard that is hard to spot

Even after a careful clear-up, the council warns that small shards of glass could still be present. Those slivers are easy to miss in grass and on bare ground, and they can be harmful to anyone using the space. Young children are most at risk, and so are the delicate paws of dogs and other pets brought along for a walk.

So the warning stands, even with the bottles and cans now gone. The council’s ask is that the next person to clear away their rubbish at Huntley Gardens does it into a bin, not onto the grass.
