The one thing Cornwall’s beach cleaners keep finding: socks

Pack a bag for a Cornish beach and something usually comes home lighter than it went out. Buckets get abandoned, a flip-flop floats off, sunglasses vanish into the dunes. And one small item in particular has a real talent for staying behind on the sand long after everyone else has packed up and gone.

Socks, by the bagful

The people who clean Cornwall’s beaches have a running observation about what turns up most. It is not bottles or wrappers, though there is no shortage of those. It is socks. One after another, all season long, half buried where a pair of feet peeled them off and thought no more about it.

Cornwall Council and Cornwall Recycles shared the note with a smile. Their beach cleaning team, they said, find plenty of socks on Cornwall’s beaches. Socks, it seems, are much better at getting to the beach than getting home again.

Take it home with you

The point behind the gag is a straightforward one. Whatever you carry down to the water, carry it back up again. It is the same simple idea behind all the county’s waste and recycling work: what you bring, you take with you when you leave, so the next family finds the beach the way you would want to.
