Watch stock cars fly and bangers smash at United Downs this Sunday

There is a trophy at United Downs Raceway that began life bolted to a race car, and being hurled across the track in a fit of temper. It goes up for grabs again this weekend, when the Formula Two Stock Cars headline a four-class programme at the St Day circuit near Redruth.

That meeting, the penultimate fixture of the summer season at the raceway, runs on Sunday 16 August from 1pm. It packs in four separate classes, and each one carries a notable prize or award.

Formula Two Stock Cars, single-seat specials built for speed

The BriSCA F2 Stock Cars make their fourth St Day appearance of the season, and their first since Harley Burns of Kettering won the British Championship at the circuit in June. These are single-seat specials that produce high-speed, action-packed racing.

Their showpiece award is the Remembering Rog Trophy, raced in memory of the late Roger Willcock, who competed between 2000 and 2008 and passed away in 2010. Carefree and jovial by reputation, Roger was a hugely popular member of the stock car community, but he had a wicked temper, and regularly threw his steering wheel out of the cab when things did not go to plan. In deference, the Remembering Rog Trophy is a steering wheel mounted on a wooden plinth.

Three of the past four winners are set to be present. Julian Coombes of Exeter, Charlie Lobb of Wadebridge and Ben Borthwick of Dobwalls, who was victorious in 2025, are all expected on track.

Another driver in good form is last year’s British Champion, Tommy Farrell of Plymouth. Tommy was the winner of the most recent feature final held in the West Country, taking the chequered flag at Smeatharpe near Honiton on 3 August.

2 Litre National Bangers, hard hits and plenty of crashing

Jordan Fitzpatrick and Brook Ball of Bodmin are both set to feature in the 2 Litre National Bangers. This will be a rare outing for Brook, while Jordan has built up a strong attendance record this season.

The National Bangers reliably produce an abundance of hard-hitting displays, liberally sprinkled with entertaining crashing. Former World Champion Johnny James of Ideford, near Newton Abbot, and Lewis Fasey of Sampford Peverell, near Tiverton, are the two headline names on the entry list. Between them, they account for five wins from six National Banger races at St Day this season.

Johnny’s brothers Jayden and Nico James have each produced countless spectacular displays this year, and currently sit first and third in the Entertainers’ League table.

Stock Rods, close and non-contact

The non-contact Stock Rods race for the Adam Ignaczak Trophy, a stunning award created by Pendennis Super Yachts, the firm where the late Adam Ignaczak worked.

Father and son duo Simon and Aiden Vincent of United Downs have won the trophy in each of the past two seasons, and will be keen to keep it in the family. They face a very strong entry of almost 30 Stock Rods.

That number includes reigning World Champion Callum Hosie of Newquay, who makes his last appearance before heading to Nutts Corner on the outskirts of Belfast to defend his world title over the weekend of 22 and 23 August.

Ministox, the training ground for the stars of tomorrow

The Ministox class is where the young racers learn their craft, featuring drivers between eleven and sixteen years of age. Their Cornish Championship is the showpiece of this fixture.

Mason Sealy of Taunton is the defending champion, but he faces strong competition from Charlie Lomas of Ivybridge, who scored a faultless hat-trick when the juniors were last at St Day in June, and from Lexi Crosbie of Stithians, who won the glorious Snell Family Trophy at her home circuit in April.
