The golf day behind a four-figure cheque for Fowey RNLI

Some lifeboat fundraising happens in a bucket on the quay. Some of it happens a long way from the water, on a golf course, once a year, and only turns up at the station when the man behind it is next down on holiday.

More than £1,000, raised on a golf course

Fred Gardner called in at Fowey lifeboat station to present the crew with a cheque for over £1,000. The money came from a golf day he organises and runs every year to raise funds for Fowey RNLI.

The handover was done alongside the station’s inshore lifeboat, with crew either side of him and thumbs up all round.

A familiar face on the quay

This is not a one-off. Fred runs the golf day annually, and he calls in at the lifeboat station whenever he is in Fowey on holiday, which has turned the visit into something of a fixture for the crew.

It is the sort of fundraising that rarely makes much noise. One person, one event, the same weekend blocked out every year, and a cheque that arrives without a campaign behind it.

What the station said

The thanks from Fowey RNLI were short. “Lovely to see you Fred and thank you,” the station’s post ended.

The golf day comes round every year. So, by the look of it, does Fred.
