The 11-year-old running 77km from Porthleven back to Scilly

Most people get to Scilly sitting down, with a coffee and a view of the swell. Orkney has other ideas. The 11-year-old islander sets off from Porthleven on 22 August, and by the time he reaches home he will have covered 77km on foot across seven days.

Seven days, one ferry and 77km

The challenge starts on the mainland. Orkney runs from Porthleven to Penzance, then boards the Scillonian for the crossing to the Isles of Scilly. Once he is over there the running carries on, this time as a lap of all five islands, finishing back home.

Spread across the week that works out at roughly 11km a day, every day, for seven days.

He has run most of this route before

This is a bigger version of something Orkney has already done. A few years ago he ran around all five islands across five days, covering 55km. The new route keeps that island section and adds the mainland stretch in front of it, an extra 22km on top of his previous total.

Two more days, one ferry crossing, and 22 more kilometres than the last time he tried it.

The two charities he picked

Orkney is raising money for the Marine Conservation Society and the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, described by Isles of Scilly Travel as two charities close to his heart.

How to back him

Donations go through Orkney’s GiveStar fundraiser, and sharing it does a job of its own on a challenge like this. Isles of Scilly Travel, which shared his plans, says it will be cheering him on along the way.

The first steps happen on 22 August. The last 55km of them are on ground he has already run once.
