Mount Wise Gardens’ new play park set to open in Newquay
Under the trees at Mount Wise Gardens in Newquay, a wooden lookout tower with a slate-grey slide now looks out over a climbing frame, a rope bridge and a spider’s web net strung between chunky timber posts. Months of work, and months of waiting, come to an end on Wednesday 2 September, when Newquay Town Council throws open the gates for good.

A design shaped by residents
The Grand Opening runs from 12pm to 2pm at Mount Wise Gardens, marking the completion of a major investment in the site. The final layout was shaped by community consultation and engagement, with residents helping steer the design before a single post went in the ground. Mayor Drew Creek will officially open the park at the event, and there will be free refreshments while people explore.
The park has been delivered over the summer by Wicksteed, a leading playground specialist, and features a wide range of modern, accessible and inclusive play equipment, aimed at giving children of all ages and abilities somewhere meaningful to play.
What’s gone in
The new equipment includes a timber lookout tower with a slide, a large climbing structure with monkey bars and cargo netting, a spider’s web climbing net, a wobble bridge and a run of hanging steps and swings. It sits on impact-absorbing rubber matting, with the surrounding lawns and borders tidied up to match.
The project is part of Newquay Town Council’s wider push to improve community services and public spaces across the town. Alongside the play equipment itself, the aim is to get more people outdoors and using the gardens, supporting health, wellbeing and a sense of community.
Finishing touches this month
Over recent weeks, the Town Council’s Estates Team has been working through health and safety checks, tidying overgrown vegetation and applying the finishing touches to get the gardens ready. A final independent safety inspection is booked for 27 August, and, depending on the result, the park could open to the public before the official event.
No exact date can be confirmed yet for a possible soft opening, so residents are being pointed towards Newquay Town Council’s social media channels for updates.
Dan Watkin, Director of Operations at Newquay Town Council, said the project had been years in the planning:
“It is fantastic to see this project reach completion after many months of planning, consultation and construction. Community feedback played an important role in shaping the final scheme, and we are proud to deliver a new play space that is inclusive, engaging and designed to serve the local community for many years to come.”
“This represents a significant investment in one of our valued public spaces and demonstrates the Town Council’s commitment to enhancing community facilities and regenerating local spaces. We look forward to welcoming residents and visitors to the opening event and seeing Mount Wise Gardens become an even more vibrant focal point for the community.”
