Truro Cathedral’s soaring nave, its choir stalls and its stained glass draw thousands of visitors a year, and none of it runs itself. Behind every service, every open door and every tour lies a rota of people who turn up unpaid because they want to be there, and the cathedral says it needs more of them.

What Truro Cathedral needs right now

Truro Cathedral has put out a call for new volunteers, with some posts more urgent than others. Ongoing roles remain open for welcomers, chaplains and flower arrangers, the kind of jobs that keep the building looking cared for and visitors feeling welcome. But the cathedral says it is particularly keen to hear from people who could take on camera or live stream operating, grass cutting, music administration, or hospitality and retail work in the shop and café.

Days and times can be arranged around the volunteer rather than the other way round. Whether that means a single day a month or a couple of hours a week, the cathedral says posts are open to everyone and can flex to fit.

A team job for a very big building

The current vacancy list only tells part of the story. Truro Cathedral’s wider volunteer team already stretches from bellringers to tour guides, gardeners to honorary vergers, and even someone willing to convert old VHS tapes to digital format. Roof and tower tour guides show visitors the view from up high, event stewards keep things running on busy days, and cash collectors handle the practical side of a cathedral that relies on donations as much as any other.

It adds up to one of the more varied volunteer rotas in Cornwall, all built around a single historic building in the middle of the city. The cathedral frames it as a chance to join a diverse team, get involved in the local community, meet new people, pick up new skills, and spend time somewhere it calls beautiful and historic in equal measure.

How to get involved

Anyone interested in finding out more can email [email protected]. Full role descriptions and an application form are available on the cathedral’s volunteering page, covering everything from welcomers and chaplains to the camera and live stream roles currently top of the list.

The cathedral has stood at the heart of Truro for well over a century. Its next volunteer could be reading this on their lunch break.
