Cornwall weather: Monday 24 August, cloud and gusty winds

Cloudy skies over Cornwall with a break of sunshine

You will want a jacket within reach today, even if the rain mostly holds off. Cornwall opens the week under grey skies and a brisk wind, with gusts strong enough to notice on the coast path and in the exposed clifftop car parks. The better news for anyone with plans is that the back half of the week brightens, with sunny intervals returning by Wednesday and holding into the weekend. Here is how the week’s Cornwall weather looks, day by day.

Today

Monday is a cloudy one, with the top temperature reaching around 22°C in Truro and dipping to about 16°C by the end of the day. It will feel a touch cooler than the thermometer suggests, closer to 18°C, once the wind is in the mix. There is roughly a 30% chance of rain around the middle of the afternoon, so an umbrella is worth having even though most of the day should stay dry.

The standout today is the wind. Gusts could reach 37mph, the strongest of the week, enough to churn up the sea and make the exposed headlands feel wild. The UV level is still high, so the sun cream is not redundant just because the sky has gone grey.

Tonight

The cloud hangs around overnight, with temperatures holding at about 16°C. A mild and breezy night rather than a cold one.

Tuesday

Tuesday keeps the cloudy theme going, with a high near 21°C and a low around 15°C. It should feel close to 20°C through the day. The rain risk is lower and comes earlier, with about a 30% chance first thing at around 6am, and the wind eases back to gusts of roughly 25mph. A quieter day than Monday, in short.

Wednesday

Wednesday is when the sun starts to break through. Sunny intervals are forecast, with a high around 21°C and a low of 16°C, feeling like about 19°C. There is a 40% chance of a shower in the mid-afternoon, around 3pm, and the gusts pick up again to about 29mph.

Thursday

Thursday brings more sunny intervals, with the temperature slipping slightly to a high of 20°C and a low of 14°C, the coolest night of the week. It will feel like about 19°C. The shower risk sits at 40% early on, around 7am, before the brighter spells take over. Gusts of about 28mph.

Friday

Friday holds onto the sunny intervals, with a high of 20°C and a low of 16°C, feeling like 18°C. There is a 30% chance of a shower first thing at around 7am, then a more settled feel, with the wind down to gusts of about 25mph.

The weekend

Saturday turns cloudier again, with a high of 20°C and a low of 16°C and a 40% chance of rain early in the morning. Gusts of around 28mph come back into it. After a bright run through the middle of the week, it is the cloud edging back in that is worth watching as the bank holiday weekend gets going.
