Vandalism hits Mevagissey again as neighbours rally to help clean up

Buckets, sponges and a pressure washer were out in Market Square this week, as neighbours turned out to scrub gloss paint off shopfronts, noticeboards and wheelie bins in the latest bout of vandalism to hit Mevagissey.

Windows, noticeboards and bins targeted

Photos shared by Mevagissey Parish Council show white paint splattered across shop and pub windows around Market Square, running down community noticeboards and pooling on the pavement. One window pane was smashed through entirely, leaving a jagged hole above a scattering of paint. A line of litter and recycling bins was also doused.

“Once again our community coming together to support each other,” the parish council said. “The true heart of Mevagissey is in the people who actively throw their souls into our village.”

It did not hold back on the vandalism itself. “This destructive element is intolerable, to both private property and council property,” the council said.

CCTV footage being gathered

The parish council says CCTV footage is being obtained as it looks into who was responsible. It has also put out a call for help beyond the camera footage, asking anyone with private security contacts in the village to get in touch.

No timescale has been given for the CCTV review, and the council has not said whether the vandalism has been reported to police. For now, the clean up already under way in Market Square is the clearest response, residents and contractors working side by side to get the paint off before it sets.
