Mevagissey fire station opens its doors for a taster day

The engine bay at Mevagissey isn’t somewhere the public usually gets to stand. This Saturday 19 September, anyone curious about life as an On Call firefighter is invited to walk straight in and find out what it involves.

A hands-on look, not a talk

Mevagissey Community Fire Station is running a Firefighter Taster Session, and the crew are promising it won’t just be them talking at people. Visitors get stuck into some of the practical activities firefighters actually train on, and can handle some of the equipment used on a shout.

There’s no need for any previous experience. The session is aimed squarely at anyone who has ever looked at a fire engine and wondered, quietly, whether they could do the job.

What you’ll find out on the day

Alongside the practical activities, the crew will be on hand to talk through:

• The fitness tests and recruitment process for becoming an On Call firefighter
• The pay and financial benefits that come with the role
• What the job is actually like, day to day, from people who do it

The Mevagissey crew will also run a demonstration drill for visitors to watch.

The taster session takes place at Mevagissey Community Fire Station on Saturday 19 September, starting at 10am. Turning up is as simple as coming down on the day.

Whether it turns into an application or just a morning satisfying your curiosity is entirely up to whoever walks through the door.
