The extra evening patrols that have been walking Truro city centre since autumn 2024 have come to a stop.

Truro BID has confirmed that the government money behind the city’s additional “Hot Spot Patrol” hours has run out. The core Truro Rangers patrols carry on.

What has ended

Since autumn 2024, a government-funded initiative had paid for 14 additional patrol hours a week. Those hours covered evenings and alternate Saturdays.

That funding ended on Wednesday (30 September).

What carries on

Truro BID launched the Truro Rangers Security Patrol in April 2023 as part of its 2022 to 2027 Business Plan, which levy payers approved in 2022.

The BID currently funds 46 Truro Rangers patrol hours a week and says it plans to keep doing so for this financial year.

Why the way crime is reported matters

Truro BID says earlier funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner and the Home Office was secured because crimes were being reported correctly to Devon and Cornwall Police, and not directly to the Truro Rangers.

So the BID is asking businesses to keep reporting every incident through the right channels.

How businesses should report incidents

  • At the time, by calling 999 or 101
  • Online, through Devon and Cornwall Police
  • Through the SentrySIS Crime Reporting Tool

Truro city centre businesses that want to join SentrySIS can email UKPAC at [email protected] with their name, business and email address.

Will the patrols come back?

“We hope to apply for future government funding for more Hot Spot Patrols,” Truro BID said. “Meanwhile, please continue reporting through the correct channels, not directly to the Truro Rangers.”
