Walking into a courtroom is hard enough for most people. For someone who has lived through domestic abuse, it can be the point where the whole process starts to feel like too much.

A new court launching in Cornwall this month has been set up with that in mind.

What the new court is

The Specialist Domestic Abuse Court (SDAC) launches in October 2026 and will hear domestic abuse cases at dedicated court sessions in Truro and Bodmin Magistrates’ Courts.

It brings together criminal justice agencies and support services so that victims and survivors receive specialist help throughout the court process. The aim is to make that process less overwhelming and more efficient.

It is also intended to improve the way organisations work together, and to make sure those committing domestic abuse face the consequences of their actions.

Support through the process

Victims will have access to Independent Domestic Violence Advisors (IDVAs). They can provide practical and emotional support, help people understand what to expect, and make sure their safety and wellbeing stay at the centre of decisions.

The specialist court is also expected to help cases move through the system more efficiently and reduce delays.

Who is behind it

The council commissions domestic abuse support services for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Its Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence (DASV) team leads and coordinates the multi-agency working group behind the development of the SDAC.

The launch follows months of preparation by local partners. That has included recruiting additional specialist support workers and introducing new information sharing arrangements.

“Listened to, supported and confident”

Cllr Thalia Marrington, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Public Health, said: “Domestic abuse can have a lasting impact on victims, survivors and their families, and seeking help can be incredibly difficult.

“This new specialist court is about making sure people get the support they need at every stage of the justice process. By bringing together the courts, police, support organisations and safeguarding partners, we can provide a more coordinated response that puts victims’ safety and wellbeing first.

“We want people affected by domestic abuse to feel listened to, supported and confident that they will be taken seriously. The Specialist Domestic Abuse Court is an important step forward in helping achieve that and strengthening our response to domestic abuse across Cornwall.”
