Penlee lifeboat’s Chris Davey one step closer to coxswain
Most people’s working week involves a desk. Chris Davey’s involves the Scillonian, and when he is not on that, it involves a lifeboat. Now the Penlee volunteer has another title to add to the list.
Chris has passed out as a Severn class navigator with Penlee Lifeboat Station, after being assessed at sea last week.

The assessment afloat
The test took place on exercise on the afternoon of Thursday 15 October, with Chris assessed by RNLI Coastal Lifeboat trainer Ollie George while the crew were out on the water.
He had to show his knowledge and skills using all of the navigation equipment on board, and sit an exam on the IRPCS, the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.
From the Scillonian to the lifeboat
Away from the station, Chris is first mate on the Scillonian. His fellow crew at Penlee marked the result with a simple message on social media: “Well Done Chris.”
What comes next
Passing out as navigator opens the next door. Chris can now go forward to train as a coxswain and helm, the people in charge of the lifeboat when it launches.
