A knock at the door from a firefighter, a council enforcement officer and someone from the bin contractor might sound like bad news. For a lot of students in Falmouth, it turned out to be a welcome.

Falmouth Town Council joined forces with local partners for a week of Student Hello Visits across Falmouth, calling at student properties to help new arrivals settle into their homes safely and responsibly.

Who was on the doorstep

The visits were led by the town council’s Environmental Education and Enforcement Officers, Tessa and Andy.

They were joined by Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, Biffa (Cornwall Council’s waste management contractor) and Falmouth Town Councillor Jackie Walkden. Between them, the aim was to welcome students into the community and make sure they had the practical advice they needed.

What the teams talked about

All week, the teams went from property to property offering friendly advice and support. The conversations covered four main areas.

  • Fire safety: checking smoke alarms and sharing essential safety advice.
  • Waste and recycling: explaining how local collections work and how to dispose of rubbish responsibly.
  • Being good neighbours: encouraging consideration for local residents, responsible gatherings and keeping noise to a minimum.
  • Community connections: helping students feel welcome and encouraging good relationships with the people living next door.

“From day one”

Tessa and Andy said the idea was to make students feel at home straight away.

“We want students to feel part of the community from day one,” they said. “These visits are about making sure they’re safe, informed, and confident about living in Falmouth. It’s also about encouraging respect for neighbours so everyone can enjoy a harmonious environment.”

And it wasn’t only the students who noticed. The council said local residents came out to show their support and welcome the visits taking place in their neighbourhoods.

It has thanked its partners, residents and the students who took part for helping make the week a success.
