Storm Austen: more than 100 road incidents across Cornwall so far

If you’re setting off anywhere in Cornwall, the road you drive every day may not look the way you left it.

Storm Austen has left highways crews with a job list that has already passed 100, and more reports are expected as the day goes on.

What crews are dealing with

Cormac says its highways teams are responding to more than 100 incidents across the county.

Those include large fallen trees, localised flooding and other storm-related problems on the network. And not every one can be dealt with straight away. Some locations remain unsafe to clear until conditions improve.

How Cormac prepared for the storm

Ahead of Storm Austen, Cormac tripled its overnight standby cover.

It has also stood down some routine work so that additional crews can concentrate on responding to incidents and clearing affected roads.

What to do if you’re travelling

Cormac is asking drivers to take extra care, as hazards can appear with little warning.

Fallen branches, debris and standing water may turn up on stretches that were clear only a short time before.

How to report a problem on the road

You can report a problem with a road or pavement online, but only when it’s safe to do so.

For anything posing an immediate danger, call 0300 1234 222.

Cormac has thanked people for their patience while its teams work to keep the network safe.
