Award-Winning Theatre Show ‘I’m Muslamic Don’t Panik’ Opens The Basement in Helston
The Basement opens in Helston
Helston’s newest arts venue, The Basement, is set to open its doors with its first ever theatre performance on Thursday 9th October at 7pm. The debut show, I’m Muslamic Don’t Panik by Bobak Champion, comes with a major offer: anyone under 25 can attend completely free, thanks to support from Carn to Cove.
Located at the Helston Gateway, formerly a derelict supermarket, The Basement is described as the only venue of its kind in Cornwall. It has been designed with young people at its heart and features state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems.
About the show
I’m Muslamic Don’t Panik has been touring across the country, blending live music, spoken word, breakdancing and comedy. The Guardian praised it as “so warm hearted that it is impossible not to enjoy”, while The Scotsman called it “so full of heart, it’s brimming over” (★★★★).
The performance tells the story of Bobak’s journey to Iran to explore his cultural heritage. From women running Tehran’s first and last marathon to underground breakdance battles, the show promises to share stories of family, community, joy and resilience.
Extending beyond the performance
After the show, audiences are invited to stay for Persian tea and the chance to chat with fellow theatre-goers and Bobak himself.
This evening also marks a milestone as The Basement’s very first theatre show, launching what is expected to be a programme designed to inspire and engage the next generation in Cornwall.
Ticket details
The Basement, run by South Kerrier Alliance CIC, operates a flexible pricing system to make the arts accessible. Under 25s can attend for free, while other tickets range from £10–£19 on a pay-what-you-can basis. A free ticket draw is also available for those experiencing financial hardship, with winners notified at least three days before the performance.
