Kurt Jackson’s “The Cornish Seal” Exhibition Sheds Light on UK’s Native Grey Seals
In an artistic homage to one of the UK’s most fascinating marine creatures, renowned artist Kurt Jackson unveils “The Cornish Seal,” a compelling new portfolio of artwork inspired by the grey seals native to the region. This collection is on display at the Jackson Foundation in St Just, Cornwall, from March 16th to August 10th, 2024.
Jackson’s deep-rooted connection with these seals is evident through his artwork, which draws from years of observation and study. “I can easily spend a day in the cove painting alone, and the only real company I have all day is a curious seal just offshore,” Jackson shares. His commitment to understanding their behaviours and natural environment has culminated in a body of work that not only captures the beauty of these seals but also highlights their significance within the marine ecosystem.
In collaboration with the Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust, the exhibition also features “A Seal’s Story: Sharing our Seas,” an insightful look into the lives of grey seals, particularly through the stories of ‘Septimus’ and ‘Augusta’. These highlights offer visitors a unique opportunity to learn about the Trust’s conservation efforts and the challenges faced by these marine mammals. The exhibition aims to bridge the gap between humans and seals, shedding light on the latter’s role as sentinels of the sea’s health.
This collaboration between art and conservation brings to the forefront the pressing need to listen and act upon the stories brought to us by these seals, emphasising their role in indicating the state of our marine environments. The exhibition invites visitors not only to admire the artistic portrayal of the Cornish seals but also to engage with the crucial conservation messages conveyed through the works and the accompanying research insights.
“The Cornish Seal” and “A Seal’s Story: Sharing our Seas” exhibitions are a testament to the intertwined fates of humanity and nature, urging us to heed the silent yet profound messages of our marine co-inhabitants. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Cornwall’s coast, this exhibition promises an enriching experience for all who visit, from art enthusiasts to conservationists and beyond.
