Boardmasters 2024: Crime Kept to a Minimum with Strong Police Presence

Devon and Cornwall Police have declared their policing operation at the Boardmasters music festival 2024 a success, achieving its goal of maintaining safety throughout the event. The festival, which attracted approximately 58,000 attendees and staff, saw high visibility patrols across the main festival sites at Watergate Bay and Fistral Beach, as well as in Newquay town centre, helping to prevent and detect crime.

High Visibility Patrols and Low Crime Rates

The police worked closely with festival organisers and partner agencies to ensure that both festival-goers and the surrounding community were safe during this busy time of year. Officers were on foot patrol in key areas, providing reassurance and deterring criminal activity.

Despite the large number of attendees, there were only a small number of reported crimes. Eleven arrests were made related to drugs offences, sexual offences, and assault. Out of these, three individuals have been charged with drugs offences, four have been released on bail, two received cautions, and two were released without further police action.

Incident on Friday 9th August

A notable incident occurred on Friday 9 August, resulting in injuries to some festival-goers. While most of those injured were treated on-site by medical staff, seven people were transferred to hospital for further treatment. Fortunately, all were discharged after receiving medical care.

Superintendent Russell Dawe of Devon and Cornwall Police acknowledged the concerns this incident might have caused for those involved and emphasised that it will be reviewed in the debriefing after the event.

Safeguarding and Criminal Disruption

Superintendent Dawe highlighted the importance of safeguarding at the event, noting that the police had successfully disrupted criminal activity and reduced anti-social behaviour. The event’s organisers were praised for their robust welfare and safeguarding measures, which were bolstered by the presence of specialist officers ready to respond to any reports of sexual offences or drink spiking.

These officers provided immediate support to those affected, ensuring that they received the necessary assistance and that investigations were initiated without delay.

Festival Organisers’ Response

The festival organisers expressed their gratitude towards Devon and Cornwall Police for their ongoing collaboration and expertise in ensuring the safety of the event. They recognised the importance of the police presence and the proactive measures taken to create a secure environment for all attendees.

Looking Forward

Reflecting on the event, Superintendent Dawe expressed his pride in the efforts of the police officers, staff, and partners involved in delivering the security operation. He reaffirmed the commitment of Devon and Cornwall Police to continually improving their approach to policing events like Boardmasters, with the aim of keeping festivals safe and secure for everyone.

As the event draws to a close, the success of this year’s policing operation will likely serve as a blueprint for future festivals, ensuring that Boardmasters remains a highlight of the summer festival season in the South West.
