Bodmin Leisure Centre to Go Completely Smoke Free

GLL has confirmed that Bodmin Leisure Centre will become the first of its nine leisure centres in Cornwall to go entirely smoke free.

The move will take place on 11th March to mark No Smoking Day.

Support Sessions Ahead of Launch

In the lead up to the change, the Bodmin centre will host Healthy Cornwall drop-in sessions for anyone looking for advice and support to stop smoking.

The sessions will take place on Wednesday 18th February, Wednesday 25th February and Wednesday 4th March.

According to the press release, smoking and vaping will no longer be allowed in any areas covered by the centre, including outside spaces. The drop-ins will give people the chance to speak to health improvement practitioners and get help with quitting.

Karen Edmond, Cornwall Community Sport Manager, said:

“We’re partnering with Healthy Cornwall and Public Health Cornwall and encouraging smokers to save their money and improve their health with our own Fresh Air, Fresh Start campaign.

“It means that smoking and vaping will no longer be allowed in any of the areas covered by our centre – outside as well as inside. The drop-ins will provide opportunities to speak to health improvement practitioners and get help on quitting. It may not be easy but it’s well worth it in the long run.”

All Cornwall Centres to Follow

Operating under the Better brand, GLL runs leisure centres in Bude, Saltash, Liskeard, Bodmin, St Austell, Newquay, Truro, Helston and St Ives on behalf of the council.

The eight other centres will also become smoke free over the coming months, with all sites expected to achieve smoke free status by October, widely known as Stoptober for those trying to quit.

Further drop-in sessions are planned at Bude in March, Saltash in April and Liskeard in May.
