Callywith College Alumna Holly Cornwell Joins Great Ormond Street Hospital as Staff Nurse
In a notable achievement for Callywith College, former Level 3 Health & Social Care Diploma student Holly Cornwell has embarked on a promising career as a Staff Nurse in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit for children at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Holly, a recent graduate of the BSc (Hons) Children’s Nursing program at King’s College London, shared her journey marked by challenges and triumphs. Her university experience was significantly shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic, with her first year dominated by online lectures, social distancing, and rigorous safety protocols in hospitals. Despite these hurdles, Holly’s passion for nursing remained unshaken, leading to enriching learning experiences in pharmacology and various modules during her second year.
The third year of her degree was particularly transformative, where she gained extensive knowledge from diverse placements. Her time on the children’s burns unit was especially impactful, culminating in her successful sign-off. Holly credits this period for not only broadening her professional skills but also for the lifelong friendships formed with her peers, many of whom have also advanced into successful healthcare careers.
Reflecting on her time at Callywith College, Holly expressed gratitude for the support and encouragement she received, especially from her lecturer, Jen. Although initially uncertain about pursuing a university education, the guidance and support from her lecturer and peers played a crucial role in her decision to advance her studies in nursing.
In her new role at Great Ormond Street Hospital, Holly is responsible for providing specialised 1:1 care to children aged 0-16 with heart and lung conditions. This includes monitoring patients pre and post-surgery and offering support to families during challenging times. As she completes her induction and prepares to start shifts, Holly looks forward to the opportunities and experiences her new role will bring.
Callywith College celebrates Holly’s achievements and extends their best wishes for her future endeavours. Holly’s story is a testament to the college’s commitment to nurturing talents and guiding students towards successful and fulfilling careers in healthcare.
