Exciting New Rewilding Project Underway at Cardinham Woods
A new rewilding project is taking place at Cardinham Woods, with work already underway on Cardinham Waters. In collaboration with Westcountry Rivers Trust, the project focuses on enhancing the wildlife habitats and helping to prevent downstream flooding.
Improving Habitats for Wildlife
The project, centred between Centenary Bridge and the Lost in the Woods trail, aims to use natural methods to create better conditions for local wildlife. One of the key objectives is to slow the flow of water using woody debris, which will help to reduce erosion and provide benefits for the river’s ecosystem.
The shade along Cardinham Waters is also being carefully managed to allow more sunlight to reach the river, promoting vegetation growth and increasing biodiversity. The enhanced light levels should encourage a richer variety of plant life, which in turn helps improve the in-river habitat.
Tackling Flooding
Another important aspect of the project is to reduce the risk of flooding downstream. By blocking drainage systems and re-establishing flood plains, the project will help retain water within the woodland area, slowing down its flow and reducing pressure on areas further along the river.
Efforts are also being made to increase the roughness of the ground, helping to slow water flow even further. At the same time, non-native species are being removed to make way for native plants, which are more beneficial for the local environment.
Maintaining Access
Public access remains a priority, with the Lady Vale trail staying open to visitors throughout the work. Interpretation boards will also be installed along the route, providing information on the project and the wildlife it is helping to support.
This rewilding project is expected to have long-lasting positive effects on both the local environment and wildlife, with early results eagerly anticipated by those involved.
