Hejira to perform live at St Petroc’s, Bodmin on 6th June 2025
A performance celebrating the music of Joni Mitchell will take place at St Petroc’s in Bodmin on Friday 6th June 2025, as the band Hejira brings their highly successful touring show to Cornwall.
Formed originally for a one-off gig, Hejira has developed into a touring band focused on celebrating the music of Joni Mitchell – particularly the works captured on her 1980 live album Shadows and Light. The group features a line-up of experienced, world-class musicians whose primary concern is to serve the music.
The band is led by guitarist Pete Oxley, who assembled a group of players who are not only skilled in their own right, but also passionate fans of Mitchell’s work.
Hattie Whitehead on vocals and guitar
Fronting the group is Hattie Whitehead, who sings with what has been described as “Joni’s pitch-accuracy, poise, and dignity”, and plays guitar using various open tunings to bring authenticity to the performance. Hattie won the Emerging Talent competition at Glastonbury Festival in 2016 and has released original music which has received hundreds of thousands of plays.
Her vocals have drawn praise from critics:
“Whitehead is one of the greatest singers I have ever heard” – Jazzwise, March 2024
“Honestly, one of the most perfect voices I’ve heard in ages…this lady’s voice is stunning” – Adam Dowling, BBC Radio, 4th April 2024
A highly experienced line-up
The full line-up for the performance includes:
-
Hattie Whitehead – vocals and guitar
-
Ollie Weston – tenor and soprano saxophones
-
Chris Eldred – keyboards
-
Pete Oxley – guitar
-
Dave Jones – bass
-
Rick Finlay – drums
-
Marc Cecil – percussion
Album release and 2025 tour
In November 2023, Hejira performed at the EFG London Jazz Festival, a show that was recorded and released as a live album titled Live @ The Cockpit on 26th February 2024 by Spin Jazz Productions at The Jazz Café, Camden. The album is available on CD and in a new format developed by The Spin called LSL – Look. Scan. Listen. This format includes a 32-page hardback A5 book with lyrics, notes, and a QR code for each track that links to the music via The Spin’s website. The full album can also be accessed from a single code on page 29, including bonus videos from the tour. The music is not available on public streaming services.
