Young Man Rescued from Dangerous Rip Current In Bude After Using Life-Saving Technique

Published On: 13 August 2024Last Updated: 13 August 2024By

A young man narrowly escaped a potentially life-threatening situation at Bude Beach on Sunday, marking the 50th call-out this year for the Bude Coastguard Rescue Team. The incident occurred when the individual was caught in a rip current and dragged out to sea, a situation that could have quickly escalated without proper knowledge and quick thinking.

Rip Currents: A Rising Concern

Rip currents in the Bude area have become a growing concern, with multiple incidents reported over the past few weeks. These powerful channels of water can quickly pull even the strongest swimmers away from shore, creating a perilous situation for anyone caught in them. The Coastguard Rescue Team has emphasised the importance of understanding how to respond if caught in a rip current, as these incidents continue to occur.

Life-Saving Advice: Float to Live

Fortunately, the young man involved in Sunday’s incident was aware of the “Float to Live” safety advice promoted by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). By remaining calm and floating on his back, he was able to conserve energy and call for help until rescuers arrived. This method is crucial for anyone who finds themselves caught in a rip current, as trying to swim against the current can lead to exhaustion and panic.

Safety Tips for Beachgoers

The Bude Coastguard Rescue Team has provided essential safety advice for anyone planning to enjoy the sea, especially in areas known for strong rip currents. Beachgoers are urged to visit beaches with RNLI Lifeguards present and to inform friends or family members before heading into the water. It’s also important to give them an approximate return time to ensure someone is aware if something goes wrong.

What To Do If You’re Caught in a Rip Current

If you find yourself caught in a rip current, the key is to stay calm and focus on controlling your breathing. The “Float to Live” method is vital—float on your back, hold onto any flotation devices like a surfboard or bodyboard, and raise your hand while shouting for help. If it’s impossible to get help, try to swim parallel to the beach until you escape the current, then swim towards the shore.

Helping Others in Distress

For those who witness someone in trouble in the sea, the Coastguard advises dialing 999 immediately and asking for the Coastguard. It’s crucial not to attempt a rescue yourself unless you are trained and equipped to do so, as this can put more lives at risk.

Stay Safe and Informed

As incidents like these continue to happen, the Bude Coastguard Rescue Team urges all beachgoers to familiarise themselves with rip current safety and remain vigilant while enjoying the sea. Knowing how to respond can be the difference between life and death.
